Refunds
Thirty days, no reason needed. If Preface is not what you wanted, write to us and we will refund it.
The policy
Ask within 30 days of buying and we will refund you in full. You do not have to explain why, and we will not argue with you about it.
We can be straightforward about this because you can try the whole of Preface before paying. An unlicensed copy imports your manuscript, sets it in any of the designs, runs every check and shows you the finished pages at any size. The only thing it will not do is write the file. So nobody needs to buy Preface to find out what it does to their book — and if you did buy it and it was not right, that is a thing we would rather fix than keep $129 over.
Asking
Write to hello@preface.press from the address you bought with. Tell us what went wrong if you would like to — it is useful and it is not required.
You can also ask Paddle directly, who are the merchant of record for the sale and who process the refund either way. The charge on your statement is theirs, which is the name to look for.
The money goes back to the card you paid with. How long it takes to appear is your bank's business rather than ours, and it is usually a few days.
What happens to your license
A refunded license is revoked: we stop honouring that key, and we will not reissue or support it. Please stop using Preface, and delete the key from the License panel.
We are telling you rather than enforcing it. A key is checked on your own computer, with no network, which is what lets Preface work on a plane — and the same design means a refunded copy does not stop working on its own. We think that is the right trade and we are not going to pretend otherwise. We are trusting you.
If you buy again later, you get a new key and the 30 days start again.
Where you live may give you more
If you are a consumer in the EU, the EEA or the UK, you have a statutory right to withdraw within 14 days of a purchase — though it can be given up once you start using a digital product you asked to have straight away. The 30 days above are offered in addition and are not instead of anything the law gives you. Where they differ, whichever is better for you is the one that applies.
Chargebacks
If something has gone wrong, please write to us first. A chargeback costs us a fee and takes months, and an email takes a day — and we will refund you either way, so there is nothing to be gained by the longer route. Keys attached to a chargeback are revoked in the same way as refunded ones.
After 30 days
Ask anyway. If Preface has genuinely failed you we would rather give the money back than have you stuck with it, and the date is a policy rather than a rule we enjoy.
