Terms

Preface is made and sold by Enlomi LLC. These are the terms you agree to when you buy it. They are written to be read, not to be got past.

What you are buying

A perpetual license to Preface — the right to go on using it, and to go on exporting finished books from it, indefinitely.

• It includes future updates, with no version and no date at which they stop. Preface does not expire and does not stop exporting.
• It is for one person, on up to three computers that person owns or controls, on macOS and Windows.
• There is no limit on how many books you make, what you do with them, how many pen names you publish under, or whether the work is your own or a client's.

It is a license to use the software, not a sale of the software itself. We keep the copyright; you keep the right to use what you bought.

What may be sold separately

Updates to Preface are included and we are not going to start charging for them. What may cost extra is something that is not Preface: cloud services, premium design collections, AI features, or a major new publishing module for a kind of book Preface does not handle today.

Three things that will not be sold back to you, so that the sentence above means something:

• Not something Preface already does. Taking a feature out of what you bought and selling it again is not an add-on.
• Not the export. Making the finished file is the thing a license buys. A module that gates a format Preface already writes is the same move wearing a different hat.
• Not a renumbering. A "Preface 2" that is this Preface with a bigger number is not a new product.

Preface itself needs no network to run, and that is not going to change.

Why we say perpetual and not lifetime

Perpetual describes what you keep: Preface, working, indefinitely, including its updates. Lifetime reads as an obligation on us to hand you everything this company ever makes at no charge — and the things listed above as separate are exactly what it would be taken to include. We would rather use the narrower word and mean it.

Your book is yours

Preface runs on your computer and your manuscript stays there. We claim no ownership of, and no license to, anything you write or anything Preface produces from it. The PDF and the EPUB are yours, with no watermark, no royalty, and nothing to ask us about before you publish or sell them.

Your license key

Your key is yours alone. Please do not publish it, share it, or sell it on. A key is a signed statement that identifies the license it belongs to, so a key found in public is one we can identify and stop honouring.

We may revoke a key that has been refunded, charged back, or shared publicly. Revoking stops us supporting or reissuing it; it does not reach into your computer.

Who you are paying

Payment is handled by Paddle, who are the merchant of record for the sale. Your card details go to Paddle and never reach us. Paddle's own buyer terms apply to the transaction, and the charge on your statement will be theirs.

Refunds have a page of their own.

What we do not promise

Preface is supplied as it is. It typesets books, it checks them against what the print-on-demand services publish, and it is careful — but we cannot promise it is free of faults, that a particular store or printer will accept a particular file, or that it will suit a particular book. Read a passed check as this matches the published requirement, not as this will be accepted.

Keep your original manuscript and keep your own backups. Preface never writes to the Word file it imported, and your chapters are kept as ordinary text files you can open with anything — but the copies you keep are yours to keep.

To the extent the law allows, our liability for anything arising out of Preface or these terms is limited to what you paid for it. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, and nothing here affects the rights you have as a consumer where you live.

Changes

We may change these terms for future purchases. The terms you bought under are the ones that apply to your license, and we will not change what your key covers after you have paid for it.

Governing law

Enlomi LLC is registered in California, United States. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and the state and federal courts located in California are where a dispute about them would be heard.

If you are a consumer, this does not take away the protection of the mandatory consumer law of the country you live in, or your right to bring a claim where that law says you may.
